The Comforter’s Ministry Of Reproof
Written by Rev (Dr) Prabhudas Koshy Monday, 20 March 2017
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
esus’ departure from the disciples would not mean that they would be without help. On the contrary, Jesus said, “It is expedient for you that I go away.” There is greater blessing to come their way, when Jesus would depart to His Father. Jesus then went on to explain those advantages that would come upon His leaving.
When the Spirit takes on His new dimension of work, no believer needs to feel that he is at a disadvantage. The Spirit will be their Aid. Jesus then explained the advantage they will receive when the Holy Spirit takes charge of their ministries. The first advantage is explained in verse 8 to 11. The Spirit of God will begin a ministry of reproof to the world. This will help the disciples to fulfill their calling to preach the Gospel to the world. The Greek word for “reprove” has to do with exposing or showing one’s sin and then calling to repentance.
The first aspect of His reproving ministry will be “Of sin, because they believe not on me.” The Spirit will convict the world that it is sinful because it does not believe in Jesus. Whosoever accepts the reproof of the Spirit and repent will be saved.
The second aspect of the Spirit’s reproving ministry will be “Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more.” The Jews crucified Him like a wicked person, but His resurrection and ascension will prove His true righteousness. The Spirit God will reprove the world of its rejection of God’s righteous Son and call it to repentance.
The third aspect of the Spirit’s ministry will be “Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” The Spirit will convict the world that its prince, the devil, is already judged. It will warn the world to repent.
The Spirit’s mighty working is necessary to convict sinners.
May all my Gospel efforts be directed by the Spirit.
