26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: 27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
hrist declared a comforting message lest any should fear. He promised them the special ministry of the Comforter, which would keep them in His truth and comfort, that they may function as efficient ministers of the Gospel.
The world would disagree, alter, and even reject the truth of Christ. But the Spirit will enable the believers to know the truth and boldly testify, for they themselves have the Spirit’s testimony within them. Whenever and wherever the enemy may rise, Christians will have the company of a divine Comforter. When there is earthly hostility, there will be heavenly consolation.
The Comforter is the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father. He is spoken of as a distinct Person from the Father; not a quality or property, but a Person with the name “the Spirit of truth,” a title aptly describing His work. As a divine Person that proceedeth from the Father, He is eternal and Almighty. The Nicene Creed says, “The Spirit proceedeth from the Father and the Son, for He is called the Spirit of the Son” (Gal 4:6).
When Christ said that the Spirit shall testify, He adds: “And ye also shall bear witness.” The Spirit’s working is to engage and encourage us. So it is promised that the apostles also, by the Spirit’s assistance, should have the honour of being Christ’s witnesses (v. 27). Take note that the apostles were appointed to be witnesses for Christ in the world. This denotes that their work was cut out for them. They were to attest the whole truth concerning Christ. Though Christ’s disciples fled when they should have been witnesses for Him upon His trial before the high priest and Pilate, after the Spirit was poured out upon them, they appeared courageous in preaching the cross. So we also, being empowered by His Spirit, shall witness Christ everywhere.
Christ’s ministers are His witnesses empowered by His Spirit.
My Lord and Saviour, empower me by Your Spirit to be a bold and fruitful witness for You.
