1 Peter 1:2
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
2 Thessalonians 2:13
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Peter explains how God's election is applied in the believers. He says that God's election is brought to us "through sanctification of the Spirit" (v. 2b).
Sanctification means "set apart" for God's holy purpose. The Holy Spirit calls us through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and sets us apart for a holy living. It is the Spirit of God that enables us to repent from our sins and to desire a holy living.
Peter then describes the election love of the Father that channelled through the setting apart of the Holy Spirit as bringing His elect people "unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ." When people come to the Lord Jesus Christ, they must come with a faith that is ready and willing to obey Him. True faith is an obedient faith. It is the obedient faith that receives the power of His atoning blood that was shed once and for all on the cross in His death.
Peter seems to have in mind the confirmation of God's covenant with the people of Israel. When Moses read the Book of the Covenant, the people responded by saying, "All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient" (Exodus 24:7). Then Moses sprinkled blood of the sacrificial animals on the people and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words" (Exodus 24:8). The writer of Hebrews while describing the event of Exodus 24 as a foreshadow of Christ’s shedding of blood for the remission of sins wrote, "Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, saying, 'This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.' Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. . . . . So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation" (Hebrews 9:18-28).
The power of the atoning blood of Christ not only cleanses us from sin but also enables us to be obedient to Him. The resolve to be obedient to God's Word is a sure sign of one's election, which is applied through the Spirit's sanctification.
His Spirit, His blood and His Word make us His holy people.
Lord, sanctify me of all my sins through the working of Thy Spirit. I thank Thee for the cleansing power of Christ's blood that was shed on the cross. O Lord, sanctify me! Cleanse me thoroughly. With thankfulness, faith and obedience, I yield myself wholly to thy Word. Amen.
